Fleas (Flea Infestation)
Detailed information about Fleas (Flea Infestation)

Fleas (Flea Infestation)
Species: Cat
Breeds Affected: All breeds
Overview
Infestation by cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis), small blood-sucking parasites that cause itching and can transmit other parasites (eg, tapeworms) and diseases (eg, Bartonella). The flea life cycle occurs largely in the environment, leading to rapid population growth if not controlled.
Symptoms
- Excessive scratching
- chewing
- or over-grooming—especially around the neck
- base of tail
- and groin. Flea dirt (small
- pepper-like specks) may be visible
- and in severe infestations
- flea allergy dermatitis and even anemia (especially in kittens) may occur.
Treatments
Thorough flea control is required for both the pet and its environment. All pets in the household should be treated with a veterinarian-recommended flea preventative, and environmental control (vacuuming, washing bedding, using insect growth regulators) is essential.
Medications
Topical flea adulticides (eg, fipronil, selamectin) applied monthly; oral flea tablets (eg, nitenpyram for rapid knockdown, or fluralaner/spinosad for longer protection); flea combs for mechanical removal; corticosteroids or antihistamines if flea allergy is present; dewormers (eg, praziquantel) to treat tapeworms transmitted by fleas.
