Obesity
Detailed information about Obesity

Obesity
Species: Cat
Breeds Affected: All breeds (especially indoor, neutered cats)
Overview
An excessive accumulation of body fat. A cat is considered overweight when 10-20% above ideal weight and obese when >20% above ideal weight. Obesity predisposes cats to diabetes, arthritis, hepatic lipidosis, and heart disease.
Symptoms
- The cat appears heavy with fat deposits over the ribs
- back
- and abdomen. The ribs and spine are difficult to palpate
- and the cat may show reduced activity
- poor grooming
- and decreased jumping ability.
Treatments
Weight loss through caloric restriction and increased exercise is essential. A veterinarian-supervised weight loss plan with gradual reduction (approximately 1-2% body weight per week) is recommended, along with regular weigh-ins and activity encouragement.
Medications
There is no specific drug for weight loss; instead, a prescription weight loss diet (high-fiber or high-protein) is used. In some cases, supplements like L-carnitine or low-dose NSAIDs (if pain limits activity) may be adjuncts.
