Pancreatitis

Species: Cat

Breeds Affected: All breeds

Overview

Inflammation of the pancreas that in cats is often milder and more chronic than the acute hemorrhagic form seen in dogs. Causes include concurrent IBD or liver disease (triaditis), infections, trauma, or idiopathic factors.

Symptoms

  • Nonspecific signs such as lethargy
  • loss of appetite
  • intermittent vomiting
  • and sometimes weight loss. Some cats may display abdominal pain or a hunched posture.

Treatments

There is no specific cure; treatment is supportive. Intravenous fluids are used to correct dehydration, while pain control and antiemetics help relieve discomfort and vomiting. Early nutritional support is vital, and underlying conditions (eg, IBD) should be addressed.

Medications

Maropitant (Cerenia®) for antiemesis; buprenorphine for pain control; metoclopramide or ondansetron as additional antiemetics; antibiotics if an infection is suspected; appetite stimulants (eg, mirtazapine) and vitamin B12 injections as needed.
