Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) (Feline “Cold”)

Overview
A contagious infection of the upper airways, most commonly caused by feline herpesvirus-1 and calicivirus (with possible secondary bacterial involvement). Vaccination may reduce severity, but infection is common.
Symptoms
- Sneezing
- nasal discharge (runny or crusting)
- ocular discharge with conjunctivitis
- fever
- lethargy
- and reduced appetite. In severe cases
- corneal ulcers or pneumonia may develop.
Treatments
Supportive care is key. Keeping the nose and eyes clean, providing humidification, and ensuring the cat continues to eat and drink are essential. Antibiotics may be prescribed for secondary infections and antivirals (eg, famciclovir) for severe herpesvirus infections.
Medications
Doxycycline for secondary bacterial infections; famciclovir for feline herpesvirus; topical antibiotic ointments for eye infections; NSAIDs (eg, meloxicam) for fever and discomfort; supportive care measures (hydration, appetite stimulants).
