Overview
Canine hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder resulting from inadequate production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) due to autoimmune thyroiditis or thyroid gland atrophy, leading to a slowed metabolism.
Symptoms
- Common signs include lethargy
- mental dullness
- weight gain despite a normal diet
- and cold intolerance. Skin and coat changes (thinning hair
- dry brittle coat
- hyperpigmented skin) are also seen.
Treatments
Treatment is lifelong thyroid hormone replacement with dose adjustments based on periodic blood tests.
Medications
Levothyroxine (L-thyroxine) is the standard medication, usually given daily (often twice daily).
