Overview
GDV is a life-threatening emergency in which the stomach rapidly fills with gas and/or fluid and then twists, cutting off its blood supply and leading to shock.
Symptoms
- Dogs show a distended
- hard abdomen
- unproductive retching
- drooling
- panting
- and may collapse from shock.
Treatments
Immediate emergency treatment involves stomach decompression, IV fluid resuscitation, stabilization, and prompt surgery (with gastropexy) to prevent recurrence.
Medications
Medications during treatment include IV fluids, opioids for pain management, and supportive drugs (such as anti-arrhythmics like lidocaine). Postoperative care may involve antibiotics and prokinetic agents (e.g. metoclopramide).
