Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)

Breeds Affected: Chondrodystrophic breeds (e.g. Dachshunds, Beagles, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Pekingese, Corgis, Bassett Hounds) and some larger breeds
Overview
IVDD is a condition where the cushioning discs between the vertebrae degenerate and herniate, potentially compressing the spinal cord. It may be acute (Type I) or chronic (Type II).
Symptoms
- Symptoms include spinal pain (such as reluctance to jump or a hunched posture)
- limb weakness
- and in severe cases
- loss of coordination or paralysis.
Treatments
Mild cases are managed conservatively with rest, NSAIDs, and muscle relaxants. Severe cases may require surgical decompression and postoperative rehabilitation.
Medications
Medications include NSAIDs, opioids for pain control, and muscle relaxants such as methocarbamol. Rehabilitation therapy is also important.
