Overview
Canine atopic dermatitis is an allergic skin disorder caused by environmental allergens (such as pollens, dust mites, or molds) that leads to chronic itching and inflammation.
Symptoms
- Dogs typically exhibit intense itching
- often affecting the face
- ears
- belly
- armpits
- groin
- and paws. Red
- inflamed skin with secondary infections is common.
Treatments
Treatment involves allergen avoidance, regular bathing, and medications to control inflammation and the allergic response.
Medications
Medications include short-term corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone), cyclosporine, oclacitinib (Apoquel®), and lokivetmab (Cytopoint®); antihistamines may also be tried.
