Overview

Canine atopic dermatitis is an allergic skin disorder caused by environmental allergens (such as pollens, dust mites, or molds) that leads to chronic itching and inflammation.

Symptoms

  • Dogs typically exhibit intense itching
  • often affecting the face
  • ears
  • belly
  • armpits
  • groin
  • and paws. Red
  • inflamed skin with secondary infections is common.

Treatments

Treatment involves allergen avoidance, regular bathing, and medications to control inflammation and the allergic response.

Medications

Medications include short-term corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone), cyclosporine, oclacitinib (Apoquel®), and lokivetmab (Cytopoint®); antihistamines may also be tried.
