Overview
Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious skin infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, which burrows into the skin and causes severe itching and lesions.
Symptoms
- Dogs show intense itching
- scratching
- and self-trauma with lesions
- crusting
- and hair loss—especially on the ears
- elbows
- hocks
- and belly.
Treatments
Treatment involves eliminating the mites and decontaminating the environment. Topical or systemic antiparasitic medications are used over several weeks.
Medications
Medications include topical agents (e.g. selamectin or moxidectin/imidacloprid), oral ivermectin or isoxazolines (e.g. afoxolaner, fluralaner), and short-term corticosteroids for inflammation if needed.
