Overview
Demodectic mange is an overgrowth of Demodex mites—which are normally present in small numbers—in dogs with a genetic predisposition or compromised immune system, leading to localized or generalized skin lesions.
Symptoms
- Localized cases present as small patches of hair loss with minimal irritation; generalized cases show widespread alopecia

- and secondary bacterial infections.
Treatments
Treatment depends on severity. Many localized cases resolve with topical care, while generalized cases require prolonged systemic therapy.
Medications
Medications include isoxazoline drugs (e.g. fluralaner, afoxolaner, sarolaner), high-dose oral ivermectin, or amitraz dips. Antibiotics are used for any secondary infections.
