Breeds Affected: All breeds can be affected if exposed to ticks; highest risk in outdoor dogs in endemic areas

Overview

Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted by black-legged (deer) ticks. Although many exposed dogs remain asymptomatic, some develop joint and systemic inflammation.

Symptoms

  • Common signs include fever
  • lethargy
  • shifting-leg lameness
  • joint swelling
  • and in severe cases
  • kidney inflammation (Lyme nephritis).

Treatments

Treatment is with a prolonged course of antibiotics and supportive care to manage inflammation.

Medications

Doxycycline is the primary antibiotic used for approximately 28 days. NSAIDs (e.g. carprofen, meloxicam) are used for pain and inflammation.
