Overview
Canine influenza is a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza A viruses (commonly H3N8 and H3N2). It is generally self-limiting with low mortality, though complications may occur from secondary infections.
Symptoms
- Dogs typically develop a persistent cough (dry or productive)
- nasal discharge
- fever
- lethargy
- and reduced appetite. In severe cases
- pneumonia may develop.
Treatments
Treatment is supportive care including rest, hydration, and oxygen therapy if necessary. Secondary bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics.
Medications
Antibiotics (such as doxycycline or amoxicillin-clavulanate) and NSAIDs for fever and cough suppressants (if appropriate) are used.
