Hyperthyroidism
Species: Cat
Breeds Affected: All breeds can develop hyperthyroidism, most commonly in older cats
Overview
Feline hyperthyroidism is a hormonal disorder caused by overproduction of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) by the thyroid gland, usually due to an adenoma. The excess hormone accelerates metabolism and affects multiple organ systems.
Symptoms
- Affected cats typically have a voracious appetite yet lose weight rapidly; they may also exhibit hyperactivity
- increased thirst and urination
- and a poor coat.
Treatments
Treatment options include anti-thyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy, surgical thyroidectomy, or an iodine-restricted diet.
Medications
Methimazole (Tapazole®) is the most commonly used drug. In many cases, radioactive iodine (I-131) or surgery can cure the disease.
