Overview

FIV is a lentivirus similar to HIV that attacks the immune system, leading to gradual immunodeficiency. It is mainly spread by bite wounds.

Symptoms

  • Many infected cats remain asymptomatic for years; later
  • they may develop recurrent infections
  • weight loss
  • and general debilitation.

Treatments

There is no cure; management is supportive, focusing on prompt treatment of secondary infections, good dental care, and keeping the cat indoors.

Medications

Medications include antibiotics for secondary infections, antiviral therapy (e.g. AZT) in some cases, and immune modulators such as interferon.
