Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)

Breeds Affected: FIP can occur in any cat, but young cats and those in multi-cat environments are at highest risk
Overview
FIP is a progressive, often fatal disease caused by a mutation of feline coronavirus. The mutated virus triggers an excessive immune response and vasculitis. It presents in a wet (effusive) form and a dry (non-effusive) form.
Symptoms
- Symptoms vary: wet FIP causes fluid accumulation in body cavities
- while dry FIP leads to granulomas in organs
- persistent fever
- weight loss
- and lethargy.
Treatments
Historically, treatment was supportive, but recently antiviral drugs such as GS-441524 have shown promising results.
Medications
GS-441524 (or Remdesivir, its prodrug) is used experimentally alongside supportive care (IV fluids, nutritional support, etc.).
