Overview
Feline panleukopenia is a parvoviral infection that causes severe gastroenteritis and immune suppression. The virus is hardy in the environment and highly contagious.
Symptoms
- Signs include high fever
- lethargy
- loss of appetite
- severe vomiting and diarrhea
- and rapid dehydration. In kittens
- it can be rapidly fatal.
Treatments
Treatment is aggressive supportive care, including IV fluids, antiemetics, and antibiotics to prevent secondary infections.
Medications
IV fluids, antiemetics (e.g. maropitant or ondansetron), and broad-spectrum antibiotics are essential, along with nutritional support and isolation.
