Overview
Feline upper respiratory infections are usually caused by Feline Herpesvirus-1 and Feline Calicivirus (with possible bacterial co-infection) and resemble a common cold or flu.
Symptoms
- Common signs include sneezing
- nasal and ocular discharge
- conjunctivitis
- fever
- and reduced appetite. In severe cases
- pneumonia may develop.
Treatments
Treatment is primarily supportive, including hydration, cleaning of nasal/ocular secretions, and antibiotics for secondary bacterial infections.
Medications
Antibiotics (e.g. doxycycline) are used if needed; in severe cases, famciclovir may be prescribed for FHV-1 along with supportive measures.
