Detailed information about Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD / Feline Idiopathic Cystitis)

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD / Feline Idiopathic Cystitis)
Species: Cat
Breeds Affected: All cats can develop FLUTD; risk factors include indoor living, obesity, and stress
Overview
FLUTD is a broad term for conditions affecting the bladder and urethra. In many cases, it is idiopathic cystitis related to stress, but it may also be due to urinary stones, infections, or anatomical issues.
Symptoms
- Common signs include straining to urinate
- frequent small-volume urination
- blood in the urine
- and inappropriate elimination. Male cats are at risk for urethral obstruction
- a life-threatening emergency.
Treatments
Treatment depends on whether the cat is obstructed. Obstructed cats require emergency catheterization and stabilization; non-obstructive FLUTD is managed with pain relief, increased water intake, dietary changes, and environmental enrichment.
Medications
For emergencies, urethral catheterization with IV fluids is essential. For idiopathic cases, pain management (e.g. buprenorphine), antispasmodics (e.g. prazosin), and a prescription urinary diet are used.
